How to unfollow people who don't follow you back on X
X shows your followers and following lists separately. It does not give you a built-in list of people who don't follow back. You can compare the lists yourself or use a tool that does the comparison for you.
Connect your X account to Plank, sync the list, and open the Traitors tab. It contains accounts you follow that do not currently follow you. Pardon the accounts worth keeping, then select the rest for unfollowing.
A non-follower is not always an unfollower
A non-follower is an account that does not follow you now. It may never have followed you. An unfollower is an account that appeared in your follower list before and later disappeared. Proving that change requires follower snapshots taken at different times.
Plank shows the current relationship. It does not claim that every account in the Traitors tab unfollowed you. The name is part of the pirate theme. The data is less dramatic.
X says following is not mutual. People can follow an account without receiving a follow in return. The same choice applies to you, so a one-way follow is not automatically a bad one.
Find non-followers with Plank
- Connect with X OAuth. X handles the authorization. Plank never asks you to type your X password into Plank.
- Sync your account. Plank reads your following and follower lists through the X API, then compares the account IDs.
- Open the Traitors tab. This is the current list of accounts you follow that do not follow you back.
- Sort before you cut. Use last posted date, follower count, following ratio, post count, or account age to bring likely cuts to the top.
- Pardon the keepers. Add a note if you want to remember why an account stays aboard.
- Select and confirm. Choose the accounts you want to unfollow. Check the count once more before starting the job.
Who should stay aboard?
Keep an account if you still read it, know the person, monitor the company, or need it for work. None of those accounts owes you a follow. Pardon them so they stop returning to the review queue.
Good first cuts include finished events, abandoned side projects, inactive accounts, and interests you left behind. Open the profile when the data is unclear. A low follower count or a quiet month is weak evidence by itself.
If you would follow the account again today, pardon it. If you cannot remember why it is there, inspect the profile before you send it overboard.
How to check non-followers without a tool
You can compare the two lists by hand. Open your Following list in one tab and your Followers list in another. Search for each username from the first list in the second.
This costs nothing and gives no third-party app access. It works for a short list. X does not provide a spreadsheet export or a native "not following back" filter in the standard interface, so the method slows down as the list grows.
A downloaded X archive can help with analysis, but an archive is a snapshot. Check the archive's date before using it to make current decisions.
Keep the cleanup selective
The X automation rules prohibit bulk, aggressive, or indiscriminate automated unfollowing. X also prohibits follow churn used to inflate account metrics. A review queue should help you make specific choices, not turn a follow-for-follow scheme into a faster machine.
The official API limits unfollow calls to 50 requests per user in a 15-minute window. Plank reads X's rate-limit response and pauses its queue when needed. That API ceiling is separate from X's policy enforcement.
