How to mass unfollow on X (Twitter)
A crowded following list is hard to fix one profile at a time. The sensible route is to review the list, protect the accounts you still want, and unfollow a selected batch at a pace X accepts.
X has no native mass-unfollow button. Its standard unfollow controls work one account at a time. Plank finds accounts you follow that do not follow you back, lets you pardon the keepers, and sends only your selected accounts to the unfollow queue.
Choose what to cull
Start with a rule you can explain. "Doesn't follow me back" is useful because it turns one large list into a smaller review queue. It is still only a filter. News accounts, friends, clients, artists, and useful reference accounts may never follow you back.
Recent posting data helps with the second pass. An account that has not posted for a long time may be an easy cut. An account that posts every day may still fill your timeline with material you no longer need. Read the profile before you decide.
Pick a narrow group first. Review it. Save the exceptions. A clean list built in small passes is easier to trust than one heroic purge.
How to unfollow with X itself
The native method is fine for a short list. Open your profile, select Following, then use the Following button beside an account. X asks you to confirm each unfollow.
- Open your following list. Go to your profile on X and select the number above "Following."
- Review an account. Open the profile if the name or bio is not enough to make the call.
- Confirm the unfollow. Select Following, then confirm. Repeat for each account.
This route costs no Plank credits. It also gives you no filter for non-followers, no pardon list, and no job record. Once the list reaches hundreds of accounts, the clicking becomes the job.
How to cull a following list with Plank
Plank uses X OAuth and the official X API. It does not ask for your X password. A sync compares the accounts you follow with the accounts that follow you, then puts the one-way follows in the Traitors tab.
- Connect your X account. Approve the requested access on X, then return to Plank.
- Sync the crew list. Plank loads your following and follower data. Large lists use more API requests and credits.
- Review the Traitors tab. Sort by followers, ratio, post count, account age, or last posted date. Open any profile that needs a closer look.
- Pardon the keepers. A pardon moves an account out of the Traitors queue. You can edit or remove the pardon later.
- Select accounts and start the job. Check the final count before you confirm. Plank records completed and failed requests while the queue runs.
X unfollow limits and account rules
The X API rate-limit table lists 50 unfollow requests per user in 15 minutes for the manage-follows endpoint. That is an API request ceiling. It is not a promise that any pattern below that number is safe for every account.
X also says developers may not perform unfollows in a bulk, aggressive, or indiscriminate manner. Its authenticity policy bans follow churn and large, unrelated follow or unfollow runs used to inflate account metrics. Read the X automation rules and authenticity policy before a large cleanup.
X does not publish one universal "safe daily unfollow limit." Ignore guides that turn an estimate into an official rule. Review accounts, avoid follow churn, and stop if X returns an error or limits the account.
Plank reads the rate-limit response from X. It pauses the queue when the allowance runs out and resumes after the reset time. Failed or unprocessed unfollows receive a credit refund when the job reaches a terminal state.

Can you unfollow everyone at once?
X has no select-all control for a complete following list. Plank does not remove every account either. It works on accounts that do not follow you back, and it expects you to choose the final list.
A browser extension or console script may promise a one-click wipe. Such tools can automate the X website instead of using the official API. That creates policy, security, and reliability concerns. Read the full unfollow-everyone guide before you hand a script the wheel.
Common questions
Does X notify someone when I unfollow them?
No. X says it does not send an unfollow notification. Someone can still notice by checking whether you follow them.
Is a non-follower the same as an unfollower?
No. A non-follower does not follow you now. That account may never have followed you. An unfollower is an account that followed you before and later stopped. You need historical snapshots to prove that change.
Will an unfollow remove someone from my followers?
No. Unfollowing changes who you follow. If you want to remove an account from your followers, use X's separate follower-removal control.
Can I undo a mass unfollow?
There is no group undo. You can follow an account again from its profile. Review the selection before you start.
