Unfollow everyone manually on X

Open your profile and select Following. Hover over or select the Following control beside an account, then confirm the unfollow. Repeat until the list is empty.

X documents the same process from a post, the following list, or an account profile. It does not document a select-all action. Read the current X instructions if the button has moved.

Manual removal takes time, but each decision is visible. You can stop when you reach clients, friends, private accounts, or sources you meant to keep.

What mass-unfollow tools can do

A script may stop when X changes its page markup, loads more accounts, or presents a confirmation dialog. It may also run far faster than you intended. Read every line before you paste code into a browser console. If you cannot explain the code, leave it on the dock.

X does not permit an indiscriminate purge

X's automation rules prohibit bulk, aggressive, or indiscriminate automated unfollowing. Its authenticity policy prohibits follow churn and rapid follow or unfollow activity used to inflate account metrics.

The API has a documented limit of 50 unfollow requests per user in a 15-minute window. That is a request limit, not an approved speed for clearing an entire list. X may enforce its policies below the technical ceiling.

A selective cull keeps the useful crew

Most people do not need an empty following list. They need fewer stale accounts. Start with one-way follows because they are easy to isolate, then sort that smaller group by recent posting data or account age.

1. Sync in Plank. Load the accounts you follow and the accounts following you.
2. Review Traitors. This list contains current non-followers, not every account you follow.
3. Pardon useful one-way follows. Keep news feeds, friends, clients, and reference accounts out of later runs.
4. Select the clear cuts. Open any profile that needs context before you confirm.
5. Run a smaller job. Let the queue respect X's API window and read the result before starting another pass.

Mutual followers remain untouched. If you still want to remove them, use X's manual control after the non-follower pass.

Save what you may need later

Before a large cleanup, note the accounts you must keep. Consider X Lists for accounts you want to monitor without keeping them in the main following list. Export or record important usernames if losing the list would be costly.

Remember what unfollowing changes. Their posts leave your home timeline, but the account may still follow you, mention you, or view public posts. Use mute, remove follower, or block when those actions better match the problem.

X does not notify an account when you unfollow it. The person can still notice by checking the relationship or their follower list.
